The Concert Jazz Orchestra is a student group comprised of the best and brightest young talent at the school. In addition to playing music by the great jazz masters, the group debuts a brand new repertoire of original compositions each semester. Says director Hopkins, a Jazz Composition professor at Berklee, "It is the premier jazz orchestra at the college, featuring the best musicians playing music written specifically for them; that is the purpose of the band, to breath life into this new material."

The group represents a true melting pot of musical talent from around the world. Performers hail from Spain, Switzerland, England, Japan, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Puerto Rico, Russia, and all over the U.S. The musical expression of the ensemble represents a unique fusion of international musical styles. Says Hopkins, "The breadth and depth of musical ideas that the students create is truly astounding."

Hopkins, who has played with artists including Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach, and Ella Fitzgerald, has concocted a brew of musical delights for this performance. The Concert Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to the late John LaPorta and James Williams , two great artists and composers long associated with Berklee and close friends of Hopkins. Special guests for the tributes will include saxophonists Joe Lovano and Bill Pierce , and guitarist Mick Goodrick . The concert will also feature Tre Corda , a chamber jazz trio consisting of cellist Eugene Friesen , Hopkins on trumpet, pocket trumpet, flugelhorn, coronet and piccolo trumpet, and group leader, composer and arranger, pianist Tim Ray , who has played with Lyle Lovett for 12 years.
