(AP) Singer Ashanti Discusses Giving Up School
R&B star Ashanti gave up school for music _ but she wasn't always happy with the decision.
After Epic Records approached the singer during her senior year at a high school in Glen Cove, Ashanti decided to move to Atlanta to work on a debut CD. The recording deal ended up stalling.
"All of my friends were in college and they were like, 'Oh, my gosh! The guys! The parties!'" she told the Daily News in Sunday's editions. "I was like, 'Dang, what am I doing? Things were on the down with me and with the label and I wasn't doing anything. I started looking in the classifieds for a job."
Since then, the 22-year-old singer has rapidly climbed the musical scene, partly on the strength of her 2002 self-titled debut CD that has won a Grammy Award and gone triple platinum.
"Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I'd taken the school route," she said. "I don't think I would be making this much money if I (had), you know?"
